Exciting town centre road race for Claremorris

Claremorris will be alive with excitement on Friday evening, June 14, as Western Lakes Cycling Club promote a criterium (crit) bike road race in the town centre of Claremorris. The circuit will be a 1.3km lap around the town centre incorporating a finish in the Square. Several primes (sprints) will be held during the race with live commentary throughout.

Westport Triathlon Club is hosting the Westport Triathlon on Saturday, June 15. This spectacular route has become one of the most popular triathlon courses for newcomers and experienced triathletes alike. The sport of triathlon is growing rapidly in Ireland and is no longer deemed to be for just the elite or super fit athletes. Race director Anthony Chappat says: “This distance is a perfect introduction to triathlon and Westport is the perfect location for such a race. We think we have found an ideal course and expect our race will grow significantly in future years to come.”

Murray wins Sea2Summit

Over 1,000 athletes took up the challenge of the Westport Sea2Summit last Saturday. The Westport based competition has become on of the top adventure racing events in the country and Westport’s Anthony Murray was the first person home over the finishing line. Anthony finished in a time of 3:00.39 over the tough 56.5km course, which took in road running, cycling, a run up Croagh Patrick, sea dash and an obstacle course before finishing with a tough run to the finish line at The Mall in the town. Murray, who won the sprint competition last year, can now add the title of supreme champion for 2011.

A bracing launch of Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon

Seven brave triathletes, including some from Galway and Clare, braved the 10 degree lake waters of Lough Cutra Castle to launch the first Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon which will take place next June.
